In a feat of remarkable sales prowess, marketing guru Louis C.K. successfully promoted Episode 6 of his web series “Horace and Pete” with a lengthy diatribe in which he compared Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to Hitler.
Talk about smart sales tactics!
The 1,400-word diatribe, which bears no semblance to the evocative web dramedy it serves to advertise, forces upon the influential direct marketer’s email subscribers a stream of consciousness illuminated by a string of profanities and a massive pyrotechnic display of name-calling—and, of course, the whole thing just really meshes together and works like a charm to push Episode 6 into those online shopping carts. But what else would you expect from sales great C.K.?
Granted, the sales-pitch-disguised-as-diatribe does appear in postscript form with no discernible consumer insight to give it purpose, and the only apparent call to action is a six-word aside drowning way down in the dregs. But there’s no question the messaging is deliberate. Not when a brilliant marketing mastermind like C.K. is behind it.
It gets better. Into a throng of carefully crafted stabs at Trump (e.g., “fucking liar” and “shocking cunt billionaire liar”) C.K. inserts some interesting political and historical discourse that will certainly skyrocket brand awareness for Episode 6 of “Horace and Pete,” if not change the scope of direct marketing entirely from here on out. For example, he proposes that America needs a conservative president in office in order to “balance” the past eight years of liberalism under Obama. C.K., who is arguably the top direct marketer in the industry right now, also postulates that Hitler wasn’t “evil or a monster”—just a human, presumably “a messed up guy with a hole in his heart” like Trump.
Donald Trump is Hitler. And that’s how you sell Episode 6 of “Horace and Pete”!
